Solution-Focused Therapy aims to address stressful situations by finding solutions that help individuals feel better. It focuses on activating internal resources and emphasizes the present and future, making it particularly effective for working with adolescents.
The therapy operates under the belief that every behavior has positive intentions, and individuals make the best decisions available to them at the moment. During group sessions, participants are encouraged to create new solutions tailored to their personal resources.
Adolescence involves significant biological, psychological, and social changes, often impacting self-esteem and confidence. These feelings can lead to learned helplessness – a sense that effort is futile and that failure is inevitable, regardless of the effort put in. Such thoughts increase the risk of depression and anxiety.
Solution-Focused Therapy counters this by fostering a sense of agency. By developing coping mechanisms and learning to apply them effectively, adolescents can protect their self-esteem and enhance their confidence.
Summary:
Through discussions and group exercises, solutions are built based on participants internal and external resources.
Problems are viewed as ineffective solutions and information about unmet needs. Once the unmet need is identified, it can be addressed in a new, more effective way.
Solutions are not always directly related to the problem; for instance, if a child struggles with gaming addiction, the therapy goal might be to rebuild peer relationships rather than focusing solely on reducing gaming.
This approach assumes that the adolescent is the expert on their own life, not the therapist. The therapist adopts a stance of "not knowing" not providing universal solutions but guiding the adolescent in recognizing their needs and finding their own solutions. This equips them with tools to handle future challenges.
